Duties and Functions: The resident is given assigned readings and is taught the basic bench level performance of routine transfusion service methods including, but not limited to, ABO, Rh, antibody screen, antibody identification, direct antiglobulin testing and eluates, cord blood and RhIg evaluations, and component preparation.

Clinical Responsibilities: Clinical duties include evaluation of unexpected antibody identification, interpretation reports, evaluation of transfusion reactions, clinical consultation and concurrent utilization review.

Required Reading: After reading an overview text on blood banking, the resident is given assigned readings, generally in the AABB technical manual, that is followed by a didactic section with the medical director. Question and answer format and problem solving sessions are included.

Schedule and Conferences: Attendance at the following meetings is required: Transfusion Medicine Committee, Trauma, Quality Improvement.
